Exploring Kauai: Family Time, Rainbows, Sea Turtles, and the Dramatic Napali Coast

The relaxing finale to our Hawaiian adventure: family time at the Grand Hyatt Kauai, sea turtle encounters, and a boat ride along the dramatic Napali Coast.

After exploring the Big Island and experiencing so much adventure, we intentionally planned Kauai as the relaxing finale to our Hawaiian adventure. While there are still plenty of things left on my Kauai wish list, including a future stay at 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay, this trip was about slowing down, enjoying time together, and making memories with family and friends.

Located on the north shore of Kauai, 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay is a stunning luxury property overlooking one of Hawaii's most iconic landscapes, and it is a place I would love to experience one day. For this trip, though, the Grand Hyatt Kauai was the perfect choice for our family. It offered the relaxed resort experience we wanted at the end of our trip and was also close to where our friends were staying.

They are our neighbors back home and our boys' best friends, and one of the unexpected highlights of the trip was realizing how much quality time we had together while away. In fact, we spent more time with them during our Hawaii vacation than we had in the entire previous year. It was such a great reminder that sometimes getting away from the routines and responsibilities of everyday life gives families and friends the opportunity to reconnect in a way that is harder to do at home.

A Scenic Welcome to Kauai

We arrived in Kauai early, so rather than heading straight to the resort, we decided to make the most of our arrival day and explore the island. Since our room would not be ready yet, it was the perfect opportunity to drive north along the east coast toward Hanalei Bay.

After spending time on the Big Island surrounded by black lava fields and dramatic volcanic landscapes, the boys kept saying, "This is what I thought Hawaii would look like!" as we started making our way toward the northeast shore of Kauai. And they were right. Kauai felt like a completely different world. Almost immediately, the scenery transformed into the lush, tropical Hawaii many people imagine: towering green mountains, winding roads surrounded by vegetation, waterfalls tucked into the landscape, and a coastline that looked like it belonged in a movie. It was the perfect introduction to the Garden Isle.

Along the way, we stopped for a local breakfast where I finally got to try one of Hawaii's most iconic dishes: loco moco. If you have never heard of it, loco moco is a classic Hawaiian comfort food made with a hamburger patty served over rice, topped with a fried egg and covered in brown gravy. It is a simple but beloved local dish that reflects Hawaii's unique blend of cultures and culinary influences.

As we continued north, we made a few stops along the way, including the beach that inspired the beach scenes used in Gilligan's Island. Naturally, the theme song was stuck in our heads for the rest of the day!

Eventually, we reached Hanalei Bay and spent some time exploring the beach and the charming town before making our way back south to the resort.

Settling Into the Grand Hyatt Kauai

For this trip, I chose the Grand Hyatt Kauai as our home base, and there were a few reasons it was the right fit for our family.

Through this program, we were able to take advantage of a fourth night free promotion, complimentary breakfast, a $100 resort credit, and an upgrade that was confirmed at the time of booking.

We also had no trouble using our resort credit throughout our stay. Between meals, drinks, and enjoying the resort, it was an easy perk to put to good use.

The resort itself was exactly what we needed at the end of a busy trip. The grounds were beautiful, and the boys (and Rob!) were especially excited about the water slide. After several days of exploring Hawaii, it was the perfect place to slow down.

Not long after arriving, the boys were already asking when they could see their friends, so we arranged a dinner meet-up with our neighbors. Before heading to dinner, we took a walk along the beach together and almost immediately, we spotted sea turtles along the shore and even a monk seal resting on the beach. And then, as if Hawaii wanted to put on a show, a double rainbow appeared while we were having dinner.

Throughout our entire trip, we saw more rainbows than we could count. It is easy to understand why Hawaii is called the Rainbow State when you experience the combination of tropical rain showers and abundant sunshine that creates these magical moments.

We also happened to spend the Fourth of July with our friends, which was such a fun way to celebrate. We had no big plans, no packed itinerary, and nowhere we needed to be. We simply enjoyed good food, time together, and the kind of relaxed day that vacations are meant for.

Experiencing the Napali Coast

One of the highlights of our time in Kauai was our boat excursion along the famous Napali Coast. The Napali Coast is one of the most recognizable landscapes in Hawaii, with towering emerald cliffs, deep valleys, and dramatic ridges that drop straight into the Pacific Ocean. The jagged shape of the coastline was created over millions of years through volcanic activity, erosion, wind, and powerful ocean swells that continue to shape the cliffs today.

And we definitely experienced those swells firsthand. The boat ride felt like a real-life roller coaster on the ocean. The waves were huge, and I will admit, I was nervous beforehand about getting seasick. We were told the conditions were actually fairly calm compared to what they sometimes experience, which was hard to imagine!

Some adventurous travelers explore this coastline in small Zodiac-style boats, similar to what you might find on an expedition cruise. I honestly cannot imagine the movement they experience out there. Catamarans are another popular option, but they are not always able to get as close to the cliffs or into the smaller areas along the coastline. We chose a boat experience that allowed us to get closer to the scenery while still feeling comfortable, and we were thrilled with our decision. Even with the big swells, we always felt safe, and the views were absolutely worth it. The boys even fell asleep on the ride back, which is probably the best proof that they handled the adventure just fine!

The Perfect Ending to Our Hawaiian Adventure

We spent time exploring and eating in Koloa Town, but our final day in Kauai was exactly what we needed. We never left the resort. Instead, we watched the World Cup, swam, relaxed, enjoyed food on our large terrace overlooking the resort and the ocean, and listened to live Hawaiian music playing nearby. It was the perfect ending to a trip filled with adventure, culture, wildlife, and unforgettable scenery.

That is what makes Hawaii such a special destination. You can spend your days exploring volcanoes, chasing waterfalls, snorkeling with sea turtles, or sailing past dramatic cliffs... but you can also slow down, enjoy a beautiful resort, and simply spend quality time with the people who matter most.

After the adventure and exploration of the Big Island, Kauai gave us exactly what we needed: time to slow down, reconnect, and enjoy the beauty of Hawaii at a different pace.

Some of our favorite memories came from the moments when we had nowhere to be and nothing planned... swimming, sharing meals, watching rainbows appear, and simply enjoying time together. Kauai reminded us that some of the best vacations are not just about what you see and do, but about the people you experience them with and the memories you create along the way.
